After donating 60% of his liver to a stranger in 2018, he returned to distance running stronger than ever. This year, he\u2019s running with American Liver Foundation\u2019s (ALF) Liver Life Challenge\u00ae Team ALF at the Boston Marathon to raise awareness about non-directed living liver donation and inspire others to become donors themselves.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dafb5c3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dafb5c3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>A decision to give\u2014then keep giving<\/h3><p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3314 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/liverlifechallenge.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Damian-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p><p>Born in England and raised in Portland, Oregon, Damian has spent more than two decades teaching at a high school in Los Angeles. A lifelong athlete, Damian first explored living donation when a friend and fellow runner needed a liver transplant, but when that surgery was no longer needed, Damian asked to remain on the registry as a <a href=\"https:\/\/livingdonornetwork.liverfoundation.org\/\">non\u2011directed living donor<\/a>.<\/p><p>In September 2018, USC Keck Hospital called \u2013 he was a match for a woman with severe <a href=\"https:\/\/liverfoundation.org\/liver-diseases\/autoimmune-liver-diseases\/autoimmune-hepatitis-aih\/\">autoimmune hepatitis<\/a>. Damian said yes. On December 12, 2018, surgeons removed over 60% of his liver to be transplanted to the recipient. He had never met her, but he generously gave her life. Months later, they met and forged a bond, \u201clike family.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s an amazing feeling to know that you are giving another person the gift of health, which is priceless.\u201d<\/strong><em><strong> \u2014<\/strong> <strong>Damian Delaney<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-3313 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/liverlifechallenge.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Damian-2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"289\" height=\"289\" \/><\/p><h3>Back to the start line\u2014stronger than ever<\/h3><p>During recovery, Damian set an audacious goal &#8211; complete a marathon and an ultramarathon within one year after surgery. Four months later, he finished a marathon; six months after that, he completed his first 100\u2011mile ultramarathon. Since then, Damian has finished ten 100\u2011mile ultras and the 220\u2011mile Race Across Scotland\u2014living proof that donating an organ doesn\u2019t mean stepping back from life, it can mean leaning in.<\/p><h3>A lifelong dream: Boston with Team ALF<\/h3><p>Running the Boston Marathon has long been Damian\u2019s dream. In April, he\u2019ll toe the line with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givengain.com\/campaign\/alfboston2026\">Team ALF<\/a>, raising $10,000 to power cutting-edge <a href=\"https:\/\/liverfoundation.org\/medical-professionals\/research-awards-program\/research-program-overview\/\">research<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/liverfoundation.org\/about-your-liver\/\">education<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/liverfoundation.org\/resource-center\/help-center\/\">support services<\/a>, and lifesaving initiatives such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/livingdonornetwork.liverfoundation.org\/\">ALF Living Donor Network\u2122<\/a>\u2014the first national database connecting generous, non-directed liver donors with transplant centers across the U.S.<\/p><p>Damian\u2019s hope is simple and bold: inspire more people to learn about, talk about, and consider living organ donation.<\/p><p><strong><em>\u201cMy deepest desire now is to inspire others to consider donating part of their liver to help save the lives of those in need.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><em> \u2014 <strong>Damian Delaney<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>From the classroom to the marathon course, Damian shows how one person\u2019s choice can ripple into thousands of lives.
